To hire or to buy ?

Space, Safety and Comfort in a nutshell is the purpose of a roof box.

Unfortunately modern cars are not equipped with particularly large boot spaces.

But of course you still need to take luggage, toys, prams, food and of course the children and the family pet. Without a roof box you could be travelling like this.

So the question is – do you buy all the equipment with the cost this incurs or do you hire and save a lot of money?

To buy all the equipment you are looking at around £550 – £600 on average for a good set of roof bars and a good quality large roof box like we use. Here is an example of a good quality roof box which we use ourselves and retails at £450 and can be seen in our gallery.

TOP ADVICE

If you are considering investing in all this equipment, it is worth working out how many time you will use the equipment during its shelf life. If you only go away for one week of the year and will maybe use it a few times, then it could be a false economy buying the equipment. Also to keep in mind that if you change your vehicle at any point, then 90% of the time the roof bars will also need to be replaced to fit the new vehicle. We offer a 2 week hire at £120, so if you have paid out £600 to buy all of the equipment, this would be the equivalent of paying for 10 weeks of hires from ourselves and not having to worry about replacing equipment or repairing the equipment at any stage plus you also get to meet Paul our expert fitter and have complete peace of mind that all of the equipment has been fitted safely and conveniently for you.

THEN THERE IS THE ISSUE OF STORAGE OF EQUIPMENT

You decided to buy all of the equipment and invest in more comfortable future holiday. Now comes the issue of storage of equipment.Roof boxes are very big indeed. When you look at them on the top of a car, or on display in Halfords, they do not look as big as when you bring them home and have to store them, they are very large and will take up a lot of room especially with the roof bars and all the fixings you need to keep safe and intact. You may be lucky enough to have a garage, but they will take up a lot of room. If you decide to store them, make sure you have some sort of shelving system as these roof boxes mark and scratch really easily especially the gloss finished boxes and after a few scratches and scuffs they really do not look good.
